The Mind That Will Not Stop.

Your mind is trying to solve a problem that has no solution. It will not stop until you understand that. Maybe not even then.

Everyone tells you to stop overthinking. As if you had not tried. As if the thinking were a switch you could reach over and flip. Anyone who lives inside a racing mind already knows it does not work that way. The thoughts do not ask permission. They arrive, they multiply, they run the same loop deep into the night, each pass promising that this one will finally be the one that earns you some peace. It never is. And that is the first thing worth saying about anxiety and overthinking, the thing almost nobody says out loud.

Why Your Mind Will Not Stop

We talk about overthinking like it is a malfunction. Some glitch to be fixed. It is not. It is the oldest part of you doing the exact thing that kept your ancestors breathing, scanning the dark for whatever might kill them. The trouble is that the dark has changed. There is no predator in the room anymore. The threat your mind hunts now has no body to find, no throat to go for. It is uncertainty itself. The text left on read. The appointment Monday morning. The future, which has never once shown itself in advance to anyone who ever lived.

And a mind built to find the lion and end the lion cannot end a threat with no shape. So it circles. And circles. And calls the circling a plan.

Overthinking Is a Bid for Control

Strip the anxiety down and you find something almost tender holding it up. A wish. If I can think through every outcome, I will be ready for the worst one. I will not be caught off guard. I will be safe. Overthinking is the mind trying to control an uncertain future by living it in advance, again and again, so the real thing can never land a surprise.

It is a beautiful plan. It is also impossible, and reality does not even bother to hide why.

Go all the way down to the smallest scale the world is built on, the level of the single particle, and you find something strange waiting there. You cannot pin down exactly where a thing is and exactly where it is going at the same moment. Not because our instruments are too crude. Because the universe simply does not hold that information in one place. Certainty is not hard to come by down there. It is forbidden. The ground floor of everything is poured out of the same uncertainty your mind stays up all night trying to defeat. You are demanding a guarantee from a reality that has never once issued one, to anyone, about anything. No amount of thinking changes what the world is made of.

What the Anxiety Is Really Protecting

And even then, the thoughts are not the real thing. They are the armor. Under the spinning there is almost always something softer and more true. A fear of being hurt. A fear of failing out in the open, where people can see. And beneath both of those, the plain uncertainty at the center of a human life, the fact that we are handed no guarantees and asked to live anyway.

The overthinking is the armor. The fear is the body it is wrapped around. Fight only the armor, demand only that the thoughts go away, and you never once touch the thing they were built to guard. This is why "just stop worrying" has never worked on a single person who has ever drawn breath. You cannot argue a mind out of a fear it will not name.

How to Calm a Racing Mind

So what do we do with a mind like this? We do not silence it. A silent mind is not a thing a living person gets to own, and chasing one is just another race you were set up to lose. The work is not to win the war against your own thoughts. The work is to lay the war down.

The uncertainty does not leave. The future stays unknowable, tonight and every night after it. What can change is what you decide that unknowing is. A threat to be solved before you are allowed to rest, or the texture of being alive, the open space that also happens to be where everything good you have ever gotten arrived unannounced. You will not think your way to certainty. There is none waiting. But you can stop demanding it, slowly, and a mind that stops demanding the impossible is a mind that finally gets to set something down.

Anxiety Counseling in Longwood and Across Florida

This is the center of what I do at Srodes Counseling. In anxiety counseling we do not march to war against your overthinking, we get curious about it. What it is guarding. The shape of the loop. What your days might feel like if you were no longer braced against a future that has not come. My approach is existential, which only means I will not insult you by pretending I hold a formula that deletes uncertainty. I will sit in it with you, and help you find a way to live there. I work with adults in Longwood and across the greater Orlando area, in person and by telehealth throughout Florida. If the part about control is landing, you may see yourself in what I wrote about changing your relationship with stress.

If your anxiety has tipped into panic you cannot ride out, or thoughts of not wanting to be here, please reach out right now. Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time, day or night. You deserve support.

Your mind has spent years working overtime to keep you safe. It is not your enemy. It is tired, and it has been reaching for the one tool that cannot do the job. You are allowed to put it down. The danger was never the kind you could think your way out of, and some part of you has always known that.

Common Questions About Anxiety and Overthinking

What is the difference between anxiety and overthinking?

They feed each other, but they are not the same. Anxiety is the felt sense of threat, the tight chest and the dread. Overthinking is one of the things the mind does with that feeling: running scenarios, rehearsing conversations, scanning for what could go wrong. You can think of overthinking as anxiety looking for a job to do.

Why do I overthink everything?

Usually because some part of you has learned that if you can just think hard enough, you can stay safe. Overthinking is an attempt to control an uncertain future by simulating it in advance. It feels productive. It rarely is, because the future has more variables than any amount of thinking can account for.

Can therapy help with overthinking?

Yes. Therapy is less about forcing the thoughts to stop and more about changing your relationship to them, so a spiraling mind no longer runs the show. We look at what the overthinking is trying to protect, and at how to build a tolerance for the uncertainty underneath it.

Is overthinking a sign of anxiety?

Often, yes. Chronic overthinking, rumination about the past, and worry about the future are common features of anxiety. On its own it does not diagnose anything, but if your mind rarely gets a day off, it is worth paying attention to.
