Where Is Joy Found?
You have two lives. The first begins when you are born. The second when you realize you only have one life.
Ironically what gives life its fullest meaning is its antithesis. When we have the courage to face our death, we become aware of what matters most to us.
How many hours do we get with a loved one?
How many times do you get that moment with your pet where you show each other unconditional love?
Happiness Is Fleeting; Joy Is a Way of Being
Joy is not found in grand adventures, achievements or trophies. Not to say happiness and elation cannot originate here, but let us not conflate the experience of these similar but largely different feelings.
Happiness exists as but a fleeting emotion. It is born in circumstance or experience, and does not breed long lasting contentment. We can not rely on a temporary feeling to allow us to weather the despair that comes with the difficult experience of life.
Joy is not merely an escalated form of happiness, but a distinct way of being grounded in meaning, connection and presence. It is born in agency within the human experience. We have the capability and responsibility of creating a life that is fulfilling for us. Joy operates on a baseline that remains largely independent of immediate comfort and it possesses a unique capacity to coexist alongside life's difficulties. With practice, it is possible to feel it even through sorrow and grief.
So Where Is Joy Actually Found?
The honest truth is that I can't tell you where you will find your joy, I can only share where I have found mine.
It didn't come from a grand revelation or a moment of clarity. It came from my unrelenting search. It surprised me, not in how elusive it was but in how ordinary the scenery turned out to be.
Joy Hides in the Small, Ordinary Moments
What if joy is found in the small moments we thought were but the inconsequential daily routine of our lives? With recognition that our time here on this planet is limited, and death comes for us all, each and every moment is precious.
We have the subjective ability to choose what matters to us and I choose to let the small moments matter to me. Time with a friend. A nap with my wife and cat. Even something as small and repetitive as cooking dinner.
We must recognize that truly being in those moments won't happen on autopilot. It requires us to actually pause, notice and choose to stay in them. It is intentional and does not happen by accident. You can stumble upon it, but to make it long-lasting, it takes conscious effort.
Begin Your Own Search
So take that risk. Climb that mountain. Do what you only dreamed you were capable of. But what if joy isn't found there? What if it was already with you the whole time and you just couldn't see it.
I invite you to take this message and begin the search to find what it is that will give your life a sense of meaning, purpose and joy. This search is at the heart of how I work. My approach is rooted in existential counseling, helping you face what matters most and build a life grounded in meaning rather than momentary comfort. If you would rather not make this search alone, I see clients in person in Wekiwa Springs and by telehealth across Florida.
